Follow these easy steps to replace your spare tire:
- Determine the size and specifications of your current spare tire. This information can be found on the sidewall of the tire.
- Buy a replacement spare tire that matches those specifications. Ensure it is suitable for your vehicle. You can find spare tire by vehicle.
- Depending on your vehicle, the spare tire might be located underneath the vehicle (common in trucks and some SUVs), inside the trunk, or on the rear door (typical for some SUVs).
- If it's in the trunk, remove any covering or panels that conceal the spare. If it's underneath the vehicle, there's often a mechanism you have to unwind (sometimes from inside the trunk or cargo area) to lower the tire to the ground. If it's on the rear door, there might be a protective cover that you need to remove first, and then you can unbolt the tire.
- As you are replacing the spare tire, it is a good time to ensure that the jack, lug wrench, and other tools are still in good condition and present. If any are missing or damaged, consider replacing the whole spare tire kit.
- Place the new spare tire in the same position as the old one. If it's in the trunk, secure it in place. There might be a central bolt or mechanism to hold it down. If it's underneath, raise it up and secure it using the mechanism. If it's on the rear door, bolt it back in place and replace the protective cover if there is one.
- Don't just throw the old tire away. Many places have regulations about tire disposal due to their environmental impact. Take the old spare tire to a tire shop or recycling center. They will often take it for a small fee or even for free.
- Even if you're not using it, over time a spare tire can lose air. Regularly check spare tire pressure to ensure it's ready for use if needed.
